Woldgate Skill Finding Workshop

  • When and where

The Skill Finding Workshop will run at Woldgate College, Pocklington (YO42 2LL) on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 August 2012 and will be open from 09:00 – 16:30 each day.

Rehearsals will run from 10:00 to 16:00 each day, and by signing up for your son/daughter to take part you undertake that they will be present throughout both days of workshops.  We will be working to a tight schedule so that we are able to get through as pieces as possible.  Please try to arrive on time, we know that sometimes you may be delayed or unable to attend at all – if this is the case, please let us know on 07977 982 986.

At the end of each day we expect that participants will be collected by their parents/guardians.  If your son/daughter is allowed to get home by themselves, or will be going with someone other than yourself – be it a friend or another family member – please let us know in writing.

    What to wear

The Skill Finding Workshop will involve participants dancing so tight trousers, jeans and short skirts are not particularly suitable.  Participants should wear clothes that they will feel comfortable moving in.  If they have dance shoes, they are welcome to wear them but you do not need to go out and buy them to take part; trainers will be fine.

    Breaks, food and drinks

There will be a break in the morning and afternoon rehearsal sessions, and a longer break for lunch.  Please ensure that students arrive in the morning with the food and drink that they require for the day.  It is not our normal practice to allow students off site during break or lunch times; occasionally our rehearsal schedules change so it is better for everybody to stay close.

During these breaks, a team of chaperones will supervise students and it is important that students follow instructions and make sure that whilst they are relaxing and enjoying themselves, they are staying safe.  If the weather is nice, students will be able to eat their lunch outside, please send them with any sun cream that they may need.

Please make sure that all students bring with them a bottle of water each day.  There are water fountains available to refill the bottles throughout the day.

Due to the risk of allergies we ask that you do not send food containing nuts to the workshops, and we discourage young people from swapping food.  We also ask that chewing gum and bubble gum are not brought to the sessions.  We thank you for your support.

    Staff

The Skill Finding Workshop is run by a creative team consisting of a Musical Director and a Choreographer – both of whom are experienced and skilled practitioners.  They are supported by a Chaperone team who make sure that you are safe during break times and lunch time as well as before and after the rehearsals.  All of the staff have a full CRB Disclosure and are experienced at working with young people.  There is at least one First Aider in each team.

Sometimes, young artists support this team of staff – they are there to help out the staff team and to support the participants’ development.  They will probably not be much older than the participants and they will be learning too.

Will we be looking at a whole show in 2 days?

The Skill Finding Workshop doesn’t look at a whole show.  Rather, participants will learn songs and dances from a variety of musicals.  There will be opportunities to sing and dance to songs that they learn.  There will also be lots of fun theatre, dance and music games.

We will never make anybody do anything that they really don’t want to and participants don’t to have any prior experience to take part, and they don’t need to prepare an audition piece.

    The sharing

At the end of the second day we will share the work that the young people have done.  There will be no costumes or props, but this will be the culmination of two days hard work.  We plan for the sharing to take place at 15:00 on Wednesday, it will be in the College Hall.  There is no charge for coming to watch, so please come and support the performers if you can.
